She Is Not Unwilling She Is Afraid

She says no in a way that sounds like defiance and it is not defiance.

You have been treating it as defiance for about a year, because that is what it looks like from outside, and because everybody around you reads it that way and offers advice accordingly.

Do not let her get away with that. Do not give in. You are letting her run the house.

And you have half taken that advice, and it has made everything worse, and you could not have said why until recently.

Here is what you have started to notice.

The no comes too fast. It arrives before the invitation has finished, and it is louder than the situation calls for, and afterward she is not triumphant, which a child who has won something would be. She is flat, or she gets clingy about something unrelated an hour later.

That is not a child defending her territory. That is a child getting a threat out of the room as fast as possible.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it, and it changes the whole problem. You have not been failing to hold a line. You have been holding a line against something that was never on the other side of it.

A bruised reed shall he not break

There is a description in Isaiah of how the servant of God handles the fragile, and the precision of it is the point.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. (Isaiah 42:3, King James Version)

A bruised reed he will not break, and the smoking flax he will not quench; he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

You have a description here of God's method with the fragile, and Isaiah 42:3 has never once made gentleness a suspension of the real work. The verse ends with bringing forth judgment unto truth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that work without snapping anything on the way.

You are able to see how carefully those two halves are held together. He does not break the reed and he does not put out the smoking wick, and he still brings the thing all the way to truth.

You have been offered a choice between firmness and softness as though they were opposite ends of one dial, and Isaiah 42:3 has never once accepted that as the shape of the problem. The verse refuses to break the reed and still brings the work all the way through, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does both of those at once in a household.

The verse describes somebody doing both at once, and it is describing God's actual method with people who are barely holding.

And notice what the smoking flax is. It is a wick with a bit of fire still in it, and the obvious practical move is to pinch it out and start again with a fresh one. He does not. He works with the one that is still smoking.

You are able to work with what is still alight in this child, and Isaiah 42:3 has never once suggested starting again with somebody sturdier. The Spirit of God is the one who brings judgment forth to truth without quenching anything, and the verse puts both of those in one sentence.

Fear is specific, and it can be found

Here is the practical difference between the two readings, and it is the reason this matters.

Defiance is general. Fear is always about something specific, and the specific thing can usually be found and removed.

You have a child whose no has a reason inside it, and Isaiah 42:3 has never once treated the fragile as unreachable. It is written that a bruised reed shall he not break, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a mother the actual thing her daughter is afraid of.

She is not afraid of going outside. Nobody is afraid of outside in general. She is afraid of one component, and it is nearly always smaller and more concrete than an adult would guess.

It might be the people from the house on the corner who talk to her. It might be that she does not know how long it will be and cannot plan for the end of it. It might be a dog three streets over. It might be that last time somebody laughed at something she said and you did not notice.

You will not find it by asking her what she is afraid of, because she does not have the words and because that question is itself a demand for a performance.

You find it by naming candidates out loud, calmly, with no pressure attached, and watching her face.

You are able to go looking for the piece rather than arguing with the whole, and looking has never once been the same thing as making excuses for anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who does the finding in a conversation a mother could not have engineered, and Isaiah 42:3 handles the bruised without breaking it.

Name it, remove it, ask again smaller

So here is the assignment.

Name one small piece of it out loud, remove that piece, and then ask again about the smaller thing.

You are able to make an invitation smaller until it is no longer frightening, and shrinking it has never once been the same as lowering what you expect of her. It is written that the smoking flax shall he not quench, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present at a front door with a mother and a frightened child.

Naming looks like this. You say, out loud, with nothing riding on it: I wonder if it is because we might see the people at number twelve.

If that is it, you will know, because something in her face will do something.

Then remove it. We will go the other way. We will not go past their house. That is the whole of it, and it is not indulgence, it is engineering.

You have taken out the one thing that made the door impossible, and removing it has never once been the same as removing the expectation. Isaiah 42:3 refuses to quench the smoking flax and still brings the work through to truth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows which single piece to lift out.

Then ask again about the smaller thing, which is now a genuinely different question. Not: do you want to come outside. Instead: do you want to come to the tree and back the other way, and we will be back before the program starts.

Short, defined, with an end on it, and the specific fear taken out.

You have permission to make this as small as it needs to be, and Isaiah 42:3 has never once required the fragile to be handled at full size. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a thing forth to truth without quenching what is barely alight, and the verse holds the gentleness and the work in the same line.

And do not congratulate her when she comes. Be entirely ordinary about it, because a fuss tells her that what she just did was hard and remarkable, and next time she will remember that it was hard.
