They Will Not ComeGalatians 6:9

I Stopped Asking A Year Ago

This message is for the parent who gave up asking twelve months ago and now finds the first sentence impossible to say out loud after so long a silence

You could not tell anybody the date, but it was around this time last year.

There was not a final argument. Nobody slammed anything. You asked, in some ordinary way, and got the answer you had been getting, and something in you quietly decided not to spend any more on this.

And you did not announce that either. You just stopped, and nobody noticed, and a year went by.

Here is where you are now, and it is a strange place.

You do not want them to come outside for the sake of the outside. That went a long time ago. What you want is to be a person who asks her children to do things again, and you have discovered that after twelve months you cannot get the sentence out.

Because it is not one sentence any more. That is what the year has done to it.

If you say it now, it means something. It means you have been thinking about it. It means a year of silence gets a name, and that everybody has to acknowledge that there was a silence, and that you are the one who ended it, and it will be a moment.

A year ago it would have been four words in a hallway. Now it is an event, and you have to have the strength for an event, and most evenings you do not.

So the whole problem is a sentence, and the sentence has grown, and the growing is the only thing that has actually happened.

Let us not be weary in well doing

There is a line in Galatians about carrying on, and the timing in it is the part that will help you.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9, King James Version)

Let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Two words there are worth your attention. Weary, and season.

You have a verse that knows people run out, and Galatians 6:9 has never once treated weariness as a failure of character. The instruction is written to people who are already tired, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts something back into somebody who has been empty for twelve months.

You are able to hear the difference between that and the way this normally gets preached at people. It is not saying be strong. It is saying do not stop, which is addressed to the exact person who has stopped.

And in due season is the second word. The season is not named, which is deliberate. Nobody in that sentence is told how long, and the not knowing is the condition under which the perseverance happens.

Which means a year of nothing does not put you outside the verse. It puts you precisely inside it.

You are inside the situation this instruction was written for, and a year of nothing has never once been evidence that the season is not coming. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person from fainting when the harvest is not in view, and Galatians 6:9 puts the reaping in a season it declines to date.

The sentence is not as big as it has become

Here is the specific work, and it is entirely in your head rather than in your household.

The sentence has grown for a year in a room with no air, and nothing external has made it bigger.

You have a sentence that has been inflating in private, and none of that has never once been happening in anybody else's head but yours. It is written that we are not to be weary in well doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who cuts a thing back down to its actual size.

Consider what your daughter actually knows. She does not have a mental note that says her mother stopped asking last September. She has no anniversary. She is fifteen and she is not tracking this.

If you say something tomorrow about the two of you walking to the end of the road together, she will hear a sentence about the end of the road.

The year is in your head. All of it. Every ounce of the load is on your side of the exchange, and that means it can be put down without anybody else being consulted.

You are able to say four words that carry a year for you and nothing at all for her, and the difference in what it costs has never once made it a false thing to say. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a hallway where only one person knows what is happening, and Galatians 6:9 asks for continuing rather than for a moment.

And so we make sure it is not a moment.

Shoes on where they can see you

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately built to have no ceremony in it.

Put your shoes on where they can see you, say one short sentence about the end of the road, and walk it.

You are able to make the return so small that nobody notices it happened, and the smallness of it has never once made it less than a return. It is written that in due season we shall reap, if we faint not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman sitting on a stair doing up a shoe.

The shoes first is not decoration. Doing the shoes in view means the sentence arrives as a description of something already in progress rather than as a proposal that has to be answered.

Then one short sentence. Going to the end of the road, back in ten. That is the whole of it. Not: I know I have not asked for a while. Not: I thought maybe we could start doing this again.

Both of those name the year, and naming it is exactly what makes it an event, and an event is what you cannot face and what she cannot answer well.

You have permission to leave the year completely unmentioned, and never explaining it has never once been the same as pretending it did not happen. Galatians 6:9 says do not be weary in well doing, and the Spirit of God is the one who restarts a thing without a ceremony over it.

Then go, whatever the answer is, and do the same thing tomorrow.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has not asked her children anything in twelve months.

You are able to start again after a year of silence, and the length of the gap has never once made the first sentence bigger than it is. No apology, no explanation, no naming of the year. Galatians 6:9 says and let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a summoned courage who gets four words out of a person in a hallway.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have carried the whole of this on your own side of the exchange, and a year that lives in one person's head has never once been a year in anybody else's. The Spirit of God is the one who cuts a thing back to its actual size, and Galatians 6:9 declines to date the season on purpose.

Shoes. Four words. Out.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Year of not asking anybody anything, you are not in my daughter's head. Galatians 6:9 says let us not be weary in well doing, so by the Holy Spirit I put my shoes on where she can see me tonight and I say four words, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence that grew in private, you have never once been as big as you have become. The written word declines to name the season and asks only that we do not faint, and by the Holy Spirit I say the small version tonight.
  3. Father, You wrote that instruction to people who were already tired and You did not scold them for being tired. Your word says for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not, so by Your Spirit I do my shoes on the bottom stair, and I say end of the road, and I go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
