I Do Not Even Have Ten

Ten minutes is not a small ask in this house. Ten minutes is a fantasy.

You read the number and you did the arithmetic before you finished the sentence, and the arithmetic said no, and then you felt the thing you always feel, which is that even the version made for people with no time is not made for you.

Here is your actual day, for anybody who has forgotten what this stage is.

There is no block of ten minutes. Not one. There are fragments. There is the stretch while the middle one is in the bath and the baby is on the floor, which is four minutes if nobody cries. There is the bit at half past two. There is whatever exists between the last thing and the next thing, which is never long enough to change into anything or go anywhere.

And every article you read is written for somebody with a door they can walk out of.

So you have concluded, reasonably, that this is not for you yet, and you will do it when they are older, and there is a version of you filed away somewhere waiting for that.

I want to say two things, and the first is that you are right about the ten minutes.

You do not have ten minutes. I am not going to tell you that you do, or suggest you get up earlier, which is the advice that makes women in your position want to throw something.

You have four. So this article is about the four.

She of her want did cast in all that she had

There is a moment in Mark where a woman puts in an amount so small it is almost comic, and the assessment of it is the surprise.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. (Mark 12:42, King James Version)

Two mites. The smallest coins in circulation, and two of them, and the text is precise about how little it was.

You have a story here where the smallest possible contribution is examined closely and named the largest, and Mark 12:42 has never once been about the amount. The verse records exactly how small it was, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the accounting that nobody standing in that treasury could do.

You are able to see what makes the assessment work. He does not say her two mites were secretly worth a lot. He says she put in more than all of them, and the reason given is that they gave out of abundance and she gave everything she had.

The unit of measurement is not the coin. It is the proportion of what was available.

Which means the woman with four minutes who uses four minutes has put in the entire supply, and the woman with an hour who uses twenty has not, and the arithmetic runs in a direction nobody expects.

You are able to put in everything you have and have it counted as everything, and Mark 12:42 has never once measured a gift by what somebody else was able to give. The Spirit of God is the one who sees the size of the supply, and the passage puts the widow's whole living beside their surplus.

Four minutes is not a smaller version of ten

Here is the practical shift, and it is a change of category rather than a reduction.

Four minutes is not a failed ten minutes. It is a complete four minutes.

You have been measuring against a number that was never yours, and Mark 12:42 has never once graded anybody against somebody else's capacity. It is written that she threw in two mites, and the Holy Spirit is the one who counts what a person actually has rather than what they lack.

The ten minute number on this site is a rough shape, and it exists because it is small enough for most households. In your household it is not small enough, and the number moves, and nobody is being let off.

So the number is four. Four minutes, used entirely, is your version of the whole thing, and it is not a partial anything.

And here is what four minutes actually looks like in a house with small children, because I am not going to pretend you can leave.

It happens with them attached to you. One on the hip, one holding a hand, out of the front door, to the end of the path and back twice, or up and down the hall if the weather has decided against you.

You have four minutes and two children fastened to you, and Mark 12:42 has never once required a person to be unencumbered before what they bring is counted. The widow brought what was in her hand rather than what she wished she had, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present on a front path with a woman carrying a baby.

It is not a walk. It is four minutes of a mother and her children moving together, and that is the entire thing this site is about, and you can do it at twenty past.

You are able to do the whole of this with a child on your hip, and having them with you has never once made it a lesser version of anybody else's. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a hallway with a woman and two small children, and Mark 12:42 counts the whole supply rather than the coin.

Use all four

So here is the assignment.

Take the four minutes you actually have and use all of them, outside the door, with whichever child is attached to you.

You are able to spend the entire supply, and giving all of a small thing has never once been less than giving part of a large one. It is written that a poor widow threw in two mites, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the counting in a house where nobody is watching.

All four. That is the whole discipline here, and it is different from every other article on this site.

Somebody with an hour can afford to waste a bit. You cannot, and that is not a hardship, it is what makes the four minutes what it is. Out the door at the start, moving the whole time, back in when it is over.

And do not apologize for it in your own head. Do not think of it as what I can manage at the moment. It is not a reduced offering, it is a complete one, and the word has already ruled on which of those it is.

You have permission to stop comparing this to somebody else's afternoon, and Mark 12:42 has never once put the widow beside the rich men to her disadvantage. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in four minutes at twenty past, and the passage records the smallness precisely in order to overturn it.
