I Was The Fit One2 Corinthians 4:16

They Called Me When Something Was Heavy

This message is for the man whose whole standing in his family was being the one you call to move furniture, who is grieving the loss of a role rather than a body

Your brother moved last month and he did not call you.

He got a couple of the younger ones and a van, and it was sensible, and he was probably being kind, and you have thought about it every day since.

For thirty years the phone rang and it was you. Somebody moving. Somebody's washer. Somebody's father's shed. You would go, and you would be the one at the bottom of the stairs saying, wait, let me get under it, and everybody would step back because you were the one who knew how.

That was not a chore. Try explaining that to somebody who has never had it. That was your place at the table. Every family gives out roles without discussing them, and the one you got was worth having, and you filled it well for three decades.

And it has been handed to somebody else, quietly, by everybody at once, with no meeting.

Here is why this is confusing you. You are not particularly upset about the back. The back is what it is and you have made your peace with a body that has done a lot of work.

What you cannot place is the feeling that you have been retired from your own family.

The inward man is renewed day by day

There is a sentence in Corinthians that puts two things in one breath, and the second half is usually read too fast.

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16, King James Version)

Though the outward man perishes, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Notice that Paul concedes the first half completely. He does not argue with it. The outward man is going, and he says so without softening it, which is more honest than most of what gets said to men in their fifties.

You have a verse that agrees with you about the body and then says something else is happening at the same time, and 2 Corinthians 4:16 has never once asked a man to pretend about the first half. The passage concedes the outward man and puts the renewing elsewhere, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that renewing in a man who is losing something real.

You are able to sit with that concession, because it is the first honest thing anybody has said to you about this.

And then look at the tense of the second half. Renewed day by day. Not renewed at the end. Not restored later. Day by day, at the same time as the perishing, in the same man, in the same week.

Two things are happening in you at once and you have only been counting one of them.

You are being renewed on a day when you were not asked to help with a van, and 2 Corinthians 4:16 has never once made that renewal wait for better news. The Spirit of God is the one who does that work daily and quietly, and the verse says the inward man is renewed in the same breath as it concedes the outward.

So the question is not whether you can get the role back. The question is what the role actually was, because I do not think it was the lifting.

The role was never the lifting

Here is the thing that will take a minute to land.

Ask yourself why they called you rather than somebody stronger, and there was always somebody stronger.

You have been reading your own history wrong, and being the one everybody called has never once been about being the most able man in the family. It is written that the inward man is renewed day by day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what he was actually giving all those years.

They called you because you came. Because you knew how a thing should be lifted and in what order to take a room apart. Because you stayed till the end. Because you were cheerful at hour four when everybody else had stopped talking, and because you never once made anybody feel bad for asking.

Not one of those is your back.

Your brother did not replace you with two young men. He replaced one part of what you brought and did not think about the rest, because the rest was never named out loud by anybody, including you.

You are in possession of everything that made you the one they called, and losing the lifting has never once taken the rest of it away. The Spirit of God is the one who renews the inward man day by day, and 2 Corinthians 4:16 puts that renewal in the same sentence as the wearing out.

So the recovery is not physical and it does not need his permission. It needs you to turn up.

Do the light half, and stay to the end

So here is the assignment, and it is specific.

Find a job somebody in this family is doing, go and do the light half of it, and stay there for the whole thing.

You are able to be at a job for its whole length without carrying the heaviest thing in it, and staying to the end has never once been the lesser contribution. It is written that though the outward man perishes the inward man is renewed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a man holding a door open for four hours.

The light half is real work and everybody knows it. Steadying the end of something while somebody else takes the load. Holding the door. Being the man on the stairs saying left a bit. Making sure the thing does not scrape the frame. Taking the small stuff out to the truck.

And every part of it comes easier to a man who has done it four hundred times than to two young men who have done it twice.

Do not announce a change of role. Do not say I cannot do what I used to. Just be there, doing the light half, for the whole of it.

You have three decades of knowing how a thing comes apart, and none of that has never once required you to be under the heaviest end of it. Second Corinthians 4:16 concedes the outward man and keeps the renewing going anyway, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at work in a man on the light end of a couch.

Ten minutes of it, or four hours. Whatever the job is. The point is that you are in the room and moving.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who was not called about a van.

You are able to hold your place in this family without the phone ringing for it, and that place has never once been the same thing as your back. Nobody has to apologize and nothing has to be discussed. Second Corinthians 4:16 says though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a repaired body who keeps a man where he belongs.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never called for your strength alone, and thirty years of coming when asked has never once been reducible to what you could lift. The Spirit of God is the one renewing the inward man day by day, and 2 Corinthians 4:16 says that is happening on the same days as the wearing out.

Turn up. Light half. Stay to the end.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Moving day I was not called about, you are not a retirement. Second Corinthians 4:16 says though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day, so by the Holy Spirit I turn up at the next one and take the light half, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling of being retired by my own family, you have never once been a fact about my place here. The written word renews the inward man on the same day the outward is wearing out, and by the Holy Spirit I go without waiting to be asked.
  3. Father, You conceded the outward man plainly and You kept the renewing going anyway. Your word says the inward man is renewed day by day, so by Your Spirit I turn up at the next job, and I hold the door, and I stay until the end.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
