Not About WeightRomans 8:1

Moving Became My Punishment

This message is for the woman for whom every walk is a sentence being served for something she ate, who wants movement returned to her as something other than penance

You do not go out on good days.

That sentence looks strange written down and you will recognize it immediately.

On a day when nothing has gone wrong, when everything was ordinary, you do not go, because there is nothing to go for. The walk has no function on a day like that.

You go on the other days. After the weekend at your sister's. After the thing at work with the plate of whatever it was. You go on those days, and you go hard, and you come back and something in you is settled.

That is the shape of it and it took you years to see it, and once you see it you cannot look at it directly for very long.

Because what you have built is not a habit. It is a penal system.

There is an offense, and there is a sentence, and the sentence is served on foot, and afterward the account is clear until the next one. And you have been running it since you were about twenty three.

Here is what I want to say first, before anything about how to change it.

Nobody built that on purpose. You did not sit down one day and design a system of penance. It assembled itself out of a hundred ordinary sentences said by ordinary people, and you have been living inside it for two decades without ever calling it what it is.

There is therefore now no condemnation

There is a sentence at the top of Romans eight that is short enough to be missed and is the direct answer to this.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

No condemnation. Present tense, and the word now is in it, which means it is not describing an eventual state.

You have a verse that closes a court rather than reducing a sentence, and Romans 8:1 has never once left a small ongoing account open for a person to settle. The condemnation is named as absent, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells somebody that the room they are standing in has no judge in it.

You are able to see how completely that removes the machinery, if it is allowed to.

A sentence requires a court. A court requires a judge, a charge and a penalty. The verse does not commute the penalty or reduce it or offer a payment plan. It says the whole apparatus is not there.

Which means that every walk taken in twenty years to settle an account has been a payment made into a system that had already been dissolved.

That is not a small thing to read and I am not going to hurry past it. Two decades of penance, served faithfully, against a charge that no longer existed.

You are able to stop paying into a court that has been closed, and Romans 8:1 has never once made that closure conditional on your behavior at a table. The Spirit of God is the one who is present where there is no condemnation, and the verse puts the now at the front of the sentence.

Moving is not the problem and it is not the cure

Here is the correction, and it needs to be made in both directions at once.

Movement is not penance and it is also not the thing that has been damaged. The damage is entirely in what it was made to mean.

You have a good thing that was conscripted into a system, and Romans 8:1 has never once made your body the site of a settlement. It is written that there is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who returns a thing to a person with its original meaning on it.

Walking outside with somebody is one of the most ordinary human goods there is. It has been in your life for twenty years wearing the wrong uniform.

And here is the practical shape of the recovery, which is unusual and which is the whole of this article.

You do not go out less. You go out on the wrong days.

Specifically: you go out on a day when nothing has happened. An entirely ordinary Tuesday with nothing to settle and nothing owed. That is the day the system cannot use, and it is therefore the day that breaks it.

You are able to do this on a day with no charge attached to it, and going out for no reason has never once been a waste of ten minutes. The Spirit of God is the one who is present on a day when nothing is being paid, and Romans 8:1 removes the court rather than adjusting the sentence.

Go on a day when nothing is owed

So here is the assignment, and the day matters more than the walk.

Go out on a day when nothing needs to be paid for, with somebody, and do ten minutes for no reason at all.

You are able to walk with nothing outstanding, and ten minutes that settles nothing has never once been ten minutes wasted. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is out on a street with a woman who owes nobody anything.

Pick the day deliberately. Not after anything. Not on a Monday, which in your head is a small settlement day for the whole weekend.

A Wednesday when nothing happened. That is the target.

And take somebody, which is not decoration. The system runs alone, always, because a sentence is served by one person. A companion makes it structurally impossible to be a penance, because you cannot serve somebody else's sentence and you cannot serve your own in company.

That is why this row of the site works on this, and it is the only reason the change holds.

You have a friend or a daughter or a sister who can be asked, and asking them has never once been the same as needing supervision. Romans 8:1 puts the no condemnation in the present tense, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present with two people walking with nothing to settle between them.

Ten minutes. Talk the whole way. Come home with the account exactly as it was.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who does not go out on good days.

You are able to move without serving a sentence, and there has never once been a debt outstanding for what you ate. No court, no charge, no settlement due. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a good week who closes a court that has been sitting for twenty years.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have twenty years of payments made into a system that had already been dissolved, and none of that has never once counted against you. The Spirit of God is the one who is present where there is no condemnation, and Romans 8:1 puts the now at the very front of the sentence.

A clear Wednesday. Somebody with you. Ten minutes.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Court that has sat in me since I was young, you are not open. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, so by the Holy Spirit I go out on a clear Wednesday with a friend for no reason, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence I have served on foot for twenty years, you have never once been owed by anybody. The written word dissolves the whole apparatus rather than reducing the penalty, and by the Holy Spirit I stop paying into a closed court.
  3. Father, You put the word now at the front of that sentence and You did not leave a small account open behind it. Your word says there is therefore now no condemnation, so by Your Spirit I walk on a day when nothing happened, and I take somebody with me, and I settle nothing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
