If It Is Not The Same Time It Does Not Happen

You are not inflexible. You would like that on the record before we go any further.

You have moved house four times. You have changed careers. You handle disruption at work better than most of the people around you and they say so.

There is one specific thing, and it is narrow, and you have known about it since you were about twenty.

If a thing does not have a time, you do not do it.

Not out of stubbornness. It is simply that a thing with no fixed hour never arrives. It is always available, which means it is never now, and then it is eleven at night and it did not happen, and it did not happen the day before either.

For about fifteen years that was not a problem, because your life had a shape. Seven o'clock existed. You could put something at it and it would be there tomorrow.

And in the last two years the shape has gone. The hours move. There is no seven o'clock any more, not reliably, and every attempt to attach something to a time has been broken by the third week.

So you have concluded that this is not available to you until your life settles down, which it is not going to.

Here is what I want to show you, and it is one distinction.

You do not need a fixed time. You need a fixed point. Those are not the same thing and you have never had to separate them before.

Three times a day, as he did aforetime

There is a line in Daniel about a man's practice, and there is a phrase in it that is easy to read past.

He kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. (Daniel 6:10, King James Version)

As he did aforetime. As he had always done. The practice is described by its regularity rather than by its clock.

You have a verse that describes a fixed practice without naming an hour anywhere in it, and Daniel 6:10 has never once made the timing the thing that held it. The description is three times a day as he had always done, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps something in a life whose hours are not under that person's control.

You are able to see why that detail matters in this particular story.

Daniel is a senior official in a foreign administration in the middle of a political crisis in which a law has just been passed specifically to trap him. His hours are not his own. His day belongs to a court.

And the practice survives all of that, and the reason it survives is not that he had a protected slot in a diary.

It is that the practice was fastened to something else. Three times a day, at the natural divisions of a day that exist whether or not anybody schedules them, in an upper room with windows he already had.

You are able to fasten a thing to the shape of a day rather than to a number on a clock, and Daniel 6:10 has never once required an hour to be reserved. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a practice through an administration and a crisis, and the verse describes it by its regularity rather than by its timing.

Fixed point, not fixed time

Here is the distinction and it will do the work of this whole article.

A fixed time is a number. A fixed point is an event that happens anyway.

You have been looking for the wrong kind of anchor for two years, and Daniel 6:10 has never once anchored anything to a clock. It is written that he did it three times a day as he did aforetime, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man that his day still has a shape even though the hours have moved.

What you actually get from a time is not the number. It is that the number arrives without you deciding, and its arrival is the thing that makes the practice happen rather than not happen.

Anything that arrives without you deciding will do the same job.

Your day still has events in it. The dog goes out. You come in through the door from work, whenever that is. The dinner gets cleared. The last one goes up to bed. Not one of those is at a fixed time any more and every one of them still happens.

You have four or five things in every day that happen without your deciding, and the hours moving has never once taken one of them away. Daniel 6:10 fastens a practice to the day itself rather than to an hour, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man which of those his ten minutes can hang on.

So the ten minutes goes on the far side of one of those. Not at a time. After a thing.

And it works exactly like the seven o'clock worked, because the mechanism was never the clock. The mechanism was that something arrived and you did not have to decide.

You are able to hang this on an event rather than an hour, and doing it that way has never once been a looser arrangement. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a practice in a life that has lost its schedule, and Daniel 6:10 fastens the thing to the day itself.

Fasten it to a thing that already happens

So here is the assignment.

Fasten the ten minutes to a thing that already happens, and do it whenever that thing happens.

You are able to build this on something that arrives without your deciding, and doing that has never once required your week to settle down first. It is written as he did aforetime, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is out of a back door with a man at whatever hour the day produced.

Pick the event, and pick it for reliability rather than convenience. The dog. The door closing behind you when you get in. The dinner being cleared.

Whichever one happens whether or not anybody thinks about it.

Then the rule: when that thing happens, the ten minutes happens. Not later that evening. Immediately after, so there is no gap in which a decision could be made.

And take somebody, which is what this site is for. Whoever is in when the event happens, which in a house with moving hours will not be the same person twice, and that is fine and it is still a household.

You have a day that still has a shape in it, and the hours moving has never once taken the shape away. Daniel 6:10 keeps a practice through a crisis by fastening it to the day rather than to a diary, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in it at whatever hour it lands.
