I Move At The Speed Of My Son

Every suggestion assumes a household that can all keep up with each other.

You have stopped being annoyed about it, mostly. It is not malice. Most families can, and most articles are written for most families, and that is how writing works.

But you notice it every time, and you have noticed it several hundred times by now, and the accumulation is a thing.

Here is what actually happens in this house when somebody suggests a family walk.

There is an arithmetic. How far, over what surface, how long standing, what the weather is doing, what today has already taken out of him, and whether the thing at the end can be got to. That arithmetic runs in you in about four seconds and produces a yes or a no, and it has been running for eleven years.

And then, if it is a yes, there is the second thing, which is the shape of the outing itself. Two of them at one pace and him at another. Somebody hanging back. The small negotiation about who waits.

That second thing is what wears you down, and it is not about his body at all.

It is that every family activity is structurally arranged around the difference, and the difference is therefore the most visible thing in every single one of them.

They uncovered the roof

There is a scene in Mark where four men have a problem of exactly this kind and their solution is not a compromise.

And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. (Mark 2:4, King James Version)

When they could not come near him for the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was, and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed on which the man lay.

They took a roof apart. That is not a small adjustment made at the edge of the plan.

You have a passage where the whole arrangement is rebuilt around one person who could not get in the ordinary way, and Mark 2:4 has never once described that as an accommodation. The roof comes off, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a household to reorganize itself entirely rather than partly.

You are able to see how different that is from what usually happens.

The usual thing is that the event proceeds as designed and something is added at the edge for the person who cannot do it. A slower option. Somebody hanging back. A place to wait.

These four did not do that. They did not send one man round with him to the side door. They changed the building.

And notice who is not doing anything in that scene. The man on the bed is entirely passive throughout, and the text records no embarrassment about it anywhere. It is not framed as a burden being carried. It is framed as four men solving a problem.

You are able to reorganize the whole thing rather than adapt part of it, and Mark 2:4 has never once treated the rebuilding as a favor done to somebody. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with people taking a roof apart, and the passage reports it as the obvious thing to do.

Design it around him from the start

Here is the change, and it is one decision made once rather than a hundred adjustments made forever.

Stop adapting things and start designing them around him.

You have been modifying activities that were designed for other bodies, and Mark 2:4 has never once solved anything by modification. It is written that they uncovered the roof where he was, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a household the whole rearrangement rather than the small one.

Every adapted thing announces the adaptation. That is what an adaptation is. It carries a visible seam where the change was made, and everybody in the family can see the seam, including him, and especially him.

A thing designed around him from the start has no seam in it.

So the question stops being: how do we adjust the walk so he can come. The question becomes: what is a thing this family does, where his capacity is the design rather than the constraint.

And the answer is usually surprisingly good, because designing around a limit produces things that are more interesting than the generic version. A short route with something at the end of it. A thing that happens in one place rather than over a distance. A slow thing that is slow for everybody because slow is what it is.

You are able to build a family activity where his body is the specification, and doing it that way has never once been a smaller version of a family activity. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a household that has rebuilt something entirely, and Mark 2:4 takes the roof off rather than finding another door.

Everybody at his speed, and nobody faster

So here is the assignment, and the last part of it is what makes it work.

Do the thing he can do, at his speed, with everybody in it, and let nobody go faster.

You are able to make one pace the pace of the whole household, and doing that has never once been a sacrifice made by the others. It is written that they let down the bed where the man lay, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a family moving at one speed.

Nobody goes ahead. This is the rule and it is the whole assignment.

Not because it would be unkind. Because the moment somebody goes ahead and comes back, the shape of the outing is: two speeds, one of which is the real one and one of which is the slow one, and everybody can see it.

One speed, and it is his, and it is not described as his. It is just the speed the family goes.

You have two fast children who will not understand this for about two weeks, and their not understanding it has never once been a reason to explain it in front of him. Mark 2:4 rebuilds the whole arrangement rather than adding something at the side, and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles a household into one pace.

Say it once, to them, separately: we go at one speed, nobody goes ahead, that is all.

Ten minutes. Whatever that means in distance for you, which is not the same as it means for anybody else, and does not need to be.

You have three children and one speed available, and one speed has never once been the slow version of three. Mark 2:4 rebuilds the whole arrangement around the one who could not get in, and the Spirit of God is the one who is out there with all of you at once.
